SPLOT!

To start… while Brian is blabbing, please identify an image that describes how you are feeling about preparing for “alternate mode” delivery of your courses. We’ll be asking you to share it later.
But first… let’s go back in time.
“The web as platform…”

Beyond The Blog: Ready For Prime Time

I co-founded blog and wiki platforms that are still thriving, and when I came to TRU I wanted to do that again.
We managed to bring in Alan Levine in as a Research Fellow.
It was amazing to have my old friend, and one of the true savants of open ed tech working with us… He did the foundational work that became TRUbox. But these things take time. And times had changed.
It became clear that we had two barriers to clear in getting people to engage on the open web. One was technical…

…and the other was student privacy. Remember what I was saying about the times changing?
I posed the question to Alan: how can we simplify open web authoring, and also respect student privacy and autonomy? Alan recalled some work by Tom Woodward that used form-based authoring.
I loved the concept, and Alan set out to elaborate it into practice.
I really only made one significant contribution.

And that evolved into…

I’ve already diverged too far from Levine’s Law. So let’s get to the demo!
Remember when I asked you to find an image that described your feelings about going online for your courses?

While you do that, any questions so far?

How can you get your own SPLOT?
SPLOT-ish…
A boutique food security deep map:

Turned into a cloneable generic framework:

And then adapted for a Geography course map…

Tom Woodward has collected many other applications of the SPLOT concept at https://splot.tools
So to sum up… what the heck is a SPLOT? Well, they designed and applied with two core principles in mind:
make it as easy as possible to post activity to the open web in an appealing and accessible way
allow users to do so without creating accounts, or providing any required personal information
How is that SPLOT of ours looking?
