(Web) Literacy Across the Curriculum

Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan famously stated “The medium is the message” (Understanding Media, 1964). More than fifty years later, this statement resonates more strongly than ever— particularly in the “online era”. In this discussion-focused workshop we will explore how learning outcomes in course syllabi which reference media and technology, and how the kinds of technology used to teach courses, can affect students’ learning. Participants should bring a syllabus from a course they currently teach (or plan to teach) to think about, annotate, discuss— and possibly redesign— as per McLuhan’s statement.
