Learning Analytics: Affordances and Cautions

The term “Learning Analytics” refers to “the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimising learning and the environments in which it occurs” (Siemens, 2010). In this discussion-focused workshop we will explore this definition more closely; identify sources of learning analytics in Moodle and other online learning applications; brainstorm how analytics can be used in specific teaching situations, and discuss why it is important to be cautious when using analytics, particularly with respect to student privacy.
