An Introduction to Blended Learning

“Blended Learning” is a term that is widely (and colloquially) used when discussing teaching and learning in face-to-face settings with the assistance of online technologies. But what does this mean? In their widely-cited Blended Learning in Higher Education (2008), Garrison and Vaughan describe blended learning as “the thoughtful fusion of face-to-face and online learning experiences” (p.5). In this discussion-based workshop we will highlight and explore salient points from Garrison and Vaughn’s text; discuss their Community of Inquiry (CoI) model which can help inform blended approaches to teaching and learning; and brainstorm how blended approaches might be helpful in participants’ specific teaching situations.
